CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Lee Elberson, the CEO of Clayborne Test Prep and Tutoring, expressed strong support for Governor Youngkin’s executive order to limit or ban cell phones in schools.
Elberson stated, “I’m 100% in alignment with the Governor’s intention here, which is to severely limit or ban cell phones in schools. My understanding is that the data coming out is hitting the governor’s office… mental health is declining.”
The executive order aims to address growing concerns about the negative impact of cell phones on students’ mental health and academic performance, with evidence showing that SOL test scores have decreased since 2012.
Elberson highlighted the overwhelming data on mental health decline and social-emotional damage, describing it as “100% addictive behavior,” and referenced the book “The Anxious Generation,” which discusses the detrimental effects of extensive social media use on teens’ mental health.
As the governor’s order is implemented, school superintendents across the Commonwealth will determine the best strategies for their districts. Elberson remains optimistic about bipartisan support for this policy, believing it will benefit students’ well-being and education.
