DOSWELL, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Speculation on what will replace Volcano: The Blast Coaster at Kings Dominion has come to a close. After plans and permits for a new structure were released to the public last month, Kings Dominion has announced Rapterra, its newest coaster, set to open in 2025.

Bridgette Bywater, vice president and general manager of Kings Dominion, said the design was “the perfect centerpiece for our 50th anniversary celebration and reaffirms why Kings Dominion is the ultimate destination for unforgettable memories and exhilarating excitement.”

According to the release, Rapterra will become the tallest and longest launched wing coaster in the world. When completed, the coaster will be 3,086 feet long and 145 feet tall at its highest point, with a promised ride time of 89 seconds. Its launch will propel riders from 0-65 mph out of the station, up to 145 feet high, before dropping them into the rest of the layout.

The designation of Rapterra as a “wing coaster” comes from the construction of the trains. They are built with rows of seats on either side of the track, with no floor on the train. Seats are angled toward the ground to imitate the sensation of flying when riders face forward toward the track ahead.
