CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Juneteenth celebrations are held nationwide to commemorate the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in the United States and the Charlottesville community has many different ways to celebrate this year.

Here’s a look at events that are happening locally.

A number of the events are on June 19.

The Ivy Creek Foundation is hosting a tour of the History River View Farm where you can learn more about the lives and history of the Carr and Greer family as well as the major contributions to the commitment to equal rights and equality and their long-lasting legacy here in Charlottesville.

Eastwood Farm & Winery is hosting Black Women Who Wine and Sugar Bear Ice Cream for a Juneteenth exclusive wine and ice cream pairing. They will have live music from the Jen Tal & Jamal Millner Dou as well as Meisha Herron this afternoon.

Tonsler Park will have a Men’s Basketball Tournament of Champions this afternoon with live music, bouncy castles and a cookout.

The Art Bar will be teaching line dancing with an on-site instructor. They will also have drinks, mocktails, food, Cookies by Lita and Splendora gelato for those in attendance.

The celebration of Juneteenth will continue through the weekend.

Ebony Groove, a band formed at Charlottesville High School in 1987, will perform at Ting Pavilion for Fridays After Five. The group recently headlined the Charlottesville-Albemarle Black Business Expo.

On Saturday, there is a Juneteenth Rooftop Reunion Brunch with the Black Professional Network of Charlottesville at Rooftop Charlottesville with a free buffet and live music from DJ Almighty. This celebration is presented by the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center.

Also on Saturday, there is a celebration of the Poetry of Rita Dove at the Rotunda. The composer and bass-baritone, Jonathan Woody will perform his original work inspired by the poet’s piece, “Bellringer,” written about an enslaved man who was born at Monticello the day that Thomas Jefferson died.
