Joyce Ann Critzer Hicks, 86, of Ruckersville, Virginia, passed away on December 22, 2024 at Martha Jefferson Hospital surrounded by her family. Joyce was born April 10, 1938 in Charlottesville, Virginia, to the late Elsie Louis Ragland and Raymond F. Critzer. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Nancy C. Brown. Except for nine years in the Northern Virginia area, she lived in Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and in Greene County since 1974. She was a long-time member of the Hinton Avenue Methodist Church.

Joyce is survived by the father of her children, Thomas E. “Tom” Hicks; her son Thomas E. “Tommy Hicks” Hicks Jr. (Jennifer); her daughter Amy Jo Hicks; her grandchildren, Patrick Jefferson Hicks, Kelly Nicole Hicks, Alexis Nicole Harris; step-granddaughter Amanda Tucker; great-granddaughter Lacey Marie Slaughter; and a special sister-in-law, Ruby H. Gardner, and many more family members.

Joyce loved reading and working on word search puzzles. She enjoyed her son’s little league baseball and youth football activities. She was active in her daughter’s Girl Scout activities for thirteen years, serving as troop leader and Cookie Chairperson and she received numerous awards for her support of the Girl Scouts. Joyce was a long time bowler for over fifty years and she served on the board of the Charlottesville-Albemarle USBC Woman’s Bowling Association as director, sergeant-at-arms, and president. She was an avid fan of UVA sports, the Washington Redskins, and the New York Yankees.

Joyce graduated Albemarle High School in the class of 1956. She served as Treasurer of the AHS Class of 1956 Reunion Committee for many years.

She was a dedicated loving mother, grandmother, sister sister-law and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
