Joe Parrillo was 87 when he passed after a series of strokes. He passed peacefully on April 24, 2024.

He was born in Philadelphia on July 17, 1936, to Albert Parrillo and Mary Cianfrani Parillo. He graduated from Villanova University and served in the US Navy. He served on the USS Francis Marion during the Cuban Missile Crisis and retired a decorated Lt. Commander.  He married Anne Barbour on January 6, 1962. They raised their three children (Jo Anne, Tony & Leo) in Pittsburgh while Joe was a nuclear engineer with Westinghouse, primarily working on US Navy submarine engines.

Upon his & Anne’s retirement they made their way to Norfolk, Va. as they fondly remembered Joe’s time when he was based there. On their way, they stopped for a weekend in Charlottesville, Va. The fellowship they encountered during a service at Church of the Incarnation led them to forge a new life, building friendships within sight of Monticello and the surrounding Shenandoah’s. A lifetime of servant leadership led Joe to join numerous organizations locally (Elks’ & Lions’ clubs, Knights of Columbus). He worked with local committees to push the need for affordable housing to the attention of Albemarle County’s office of Community Development. Anne & Joe became regularly active with St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish. Together they achieved more than 25,000 volunteer hours at UVA Hospital.

All the friends and family will sorely miss Joe & Anne, from countless card games, winery visits and world travels. Joe is survived by his children & grandchildren. Joe will be interred in St. Vincent Ferrer Columbarium at St. Thomas Aquinas and his life will be celebrated with a Mass in his honor at a date to be determined. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Anne Parrillo’s name to the Emily Couric Cancer Clinic of UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.
