HARRISONBURG (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The James Madison University Board of Visitors Wednesday morning affirmed the appointment of current University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Chancellor Dr. James C. Schmidt as the Harrisonburg university’s 7th President. A JMU release notes Schmidt has served in higher education for some 30 years and has been chancellor at Eau Claire since 2013, which during his tenure has been ranked among top-10 regional public universities in the Midwest by U.S. News and World Report during his tenure.
Former JMU President Jonathan Alger announced in March 2024 that he would be stepping down as president and accepted the presidency at American University in Washington, D.C. Charlie King became JMU’s interim president on July 1, 2024.
Schmidt, who also has prowess as a fundraiser in his tenure bringing in a one of the largest gifts in Wisconsin history of $70-million for an athletics facility and events center.
During his speech at the announcement, Schmidt said elevating JMU will come from listening. He said he wants to hear the stories on why JMU is special and what it means to be a “Royal Duke.”
“I’m thrilled to explore the passions each of you have,” said Schmidt. “Where the enthusiasm and momentum are tapped into those strengths that help JMU reach its exciting potential.”
“I sat back, and I listened to amazing stories about faculty, about classmates, about school spirit, about what attracted them from the northeast down to Virginia to go to school,” said Schmidt. “To make this their new homes.”
He completed his speech by saying that the speed of change coincides with the speed of trust.
“I am committed to gaining yours,” said Schmidt. “Through listening, learning, and working alongside you every step of the way. Together, we will polish this gem that is JMU. Identify ready opportunities and reach the potential that we all know is possible. Thank you and Go Dukes.”
“I am honored to serve as the next president of James Madison University,” said Schmidt. “Over three decades in public higher education has prepared me to lead this great institution into the future, and I am committed to leading JMU’s vision and strategic direction, enhancing academic excellence and research, and ensuring an exceptional student experience,” added Schmidt.
“It is an honor to welcome Jim into the JMU community,” said King, the current interim president of JMU. “I look forward to our partnership in the coming months as we will collectively work to ensure this transition continues to be seamless. I take great pride in this institution and will do everything I can to support the board and our new president during this transition.”
He’ll begin work at JMU July 1.
