Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia Sports Radio Network analyst Jimmy Miller joined WINA Morning News to discuss the Cavaliers’ coaching transition and the arrival of Ryan Odom as head coach. Miller reminisced about Odom’s deep ties to the program, recalling how he grew up immersed in UVA basketball as the son of former assistant coach Dave Odom. Now, decades later, Odom returns not as a spectator, but as the leader of the team, bringing his own coaching experience and vision to the Cavaliers.

Miller also discussed the challenges of covering UVA basketball during the recent coaching transition, emphasizing how well the staff navigated the situation. “It was a difficult situation for everybody involved… The way those guys navigated that space was… really, really, truly remarkable.” He highlighted the efforts of former associate head coach Ron Sanchez, who spent crucial time keeping the team together rather than coaching early in the season. Miller praised Sanchez’s leadership and dedication, describing it as a test of character that was handled with grace.

Looking ahead, Miller is enthusiastic about Odom’s appointment and believes he embodies the values of UVA basketball. “I’m thrilled with the decision because if, as a former player, we look at the ‘Virginia family,’ I think Ryan embodies everything the University of Virginia represents.” He pointed out Odom’s deep ties to the program and strong character as key reasons why the hire is a great fit. Seven years after Odom led UMBC to a historic upset over UVA in the NCAA Tournament, he now returns to Charlottesville with an opportunity to write a new chapter in Cavaliers history.
