CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) Funding for the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail renovation is tentatively back on upcoming meeting agendas in the city and Albemarle and Nelson County, according to an information packet ACRJ Superintendent Col. Martin Kumer shared with the Legal Aid Justice Center.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposal at its Monday meeting, Charlottesville director of communications and public engagement Afton Schneider confirmed Wednesday.

A scaled-down proposal will go before the Council, then the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors will consider it at their Wednesday meeting. Nelson County’s Board of Supervisors would be the last to vote, on July 8.

All three jurisdictions must approve the measure before July 13 in order for a scheduled bond sale to begin on July 22.

The funding had been up for a vote last week, but all five bids the ACRJ board received came in over budget. According to the information packet sent to Ruby Cherian, an attorney in the Civil Rights and Racial Justice Program at Legal Aid Justice Center, the bids ranged from $54 million to $77 million.

The bids can all be viewed here on the ACRJ website.

The original budget for the project was $49 million.

On June 6, Kumer and the ACRJ board were scheduled to receive the revised proposals for the project, reflecting the changes while staying with the original budget constraints.

The focus of the work will be the demolition of the 50-year-old east wing and the construction of a new structure to take its place, as well as upgrades to the jail’s HVAC system, mental health housing and ADA compliance.

Kumer is scheduled to present the revised plans to the ACRJ Board on Thursday.
