CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Nelson County Sheriffs responded to an unusual call Saturday: a report of a kangaroo in the road.

The animal, apparently a lost pet, was injured and obstructing traffic at the intersection of Thomas Nelson Highway and Oak Ridge Road, according to a release from the sheriff’s department.

Deputies were able to coax the animal out of the roadway, with assistance from a conservation police officer, then contact its owner, who came to pick it up.

The kangaroo is expected to make a full recovery, according to the release.

It in unclear how a Nelson County resident has a pet kangaroo. Laws in Virginia require a special permit to house exotic animals. A request for more information from the sheriff’s department was not immediately answered Sunday afternoon.
