As Charlottesville prepares for our hotter months, pet owners are being urged to take extra precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of their pets. With temperatures expected to reach dangerous levels, here are some essential tips for keeping pets cool and healthy during the scorching days ahead.

Jon Sutz, animal care advocate that shares his insights on website HeatKills.com, joined Rob Schilling to share critical information on the dangers our pets face as the heat rises, and expands on what you should know as a pet owner to keep them safe:

Stay Hydrated: Providing constant access to fresh, cool water is critical. Adding ice cubes to the water can help maintain a lower temperature for longer. Additionally, frozen treats such as ice cubes containing bits of meat or fish can keep pets hydrated and entertained.

Create Cool Spaces: It’s essential to create cool, shaded areas for pets both indoors and outdoors. Drawing curtains to block out direct sunlight and using fans or air conditioning can help maintain a comfortable indoor environment.

Limit Exercise: Exercise should be restricted during the hottest parts of the day. Walking dogs in the early morning or late evening is safer. Hot pavement can burn pets’ paws, so it’s important to avoid it and keep activities light to prevent overheating.

Recognize Signs of Heatstroke: Pet owners must be vigilant for signs of heatstroke, which include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and unsteady walking. If a pet shows symptoms of heatstroke, immediate action is needed: move the pet to a cool area, apply cool (not cold) water to their body, and seek veterinary care immediately.
