Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Hospice of the Piedmont is preparing for its 24th annual 5K Run/Walk, set to take place on Saturday, May 10th at the scenic Keswick Estate. The event serves as a key fundraiser for the nonprofit, which provides end-of-life care to approximately 300 patients daily throughout Central Virginia. “We have been, actually here in the Charlottesville, area for 45 years… most of the patients that we see are in their homes,” said Communications Director Jeremy Jones. The organization’s mission includes ensuring compassionate care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

Development Officer Ophelia Lenz highlighted the community-focused nature of the event, which draws participants of all ages. “One sweet aspect of the race is the last mile we call the Memorial Mile… that last mile is lined with signs of names of people who, you know, they may be out there… holding in their heart,” she shared. The event not only honors loved ones but also raises funds to support services not fully covered by Medicare.

Hospice of the Piedmont also relies on a robust volunteer program, with over 200 volunteers assisting in roles ranging from patient companionship to pet therapy. Those interested in supporting the mission through volunteering or participating in the 5K can find more information at hopva.org/5K. Participants are welcome to register in advance or on race day, with the walk/run starting at 8 a.m.
