CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — Former Virginia wide receiver Herman Moore (1988-90) has been selected for the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame.

Moore was selected alongside 17 other former players and four coach for the hall’s 2026 class. He is the sixth Cavalier to be selected for the hall, and first since Anthony Poindexter’s induction in 2020.

During his three seasons at Virginia, Moore was a critical part of the Wahoos’ rise in the late 1980s’. Under head coach and fellow inductee George Welsh, the Cavaliers went 22-6, won a share of the 1989 ACC Championship and earned berths in the 1989 Florida Citrus Bowl and 1990 Sugar Bowl, earning its first No. 1 national ranking in the latter season.

Moore finished the 1990 campaign as a consensus First Team All-American and sixth in Heisman Trophy voting. He holds the NCAA record for highest average gain per reception (22.0) with at least 105 catches and Virginia’s single season record for receiving touchdowns with 13. His 1,190 receiving yards that year held as a program record for over three decades before it was broken by Malik Washington in 2023.

Selected by the Detroit Lions 1oth overall in the 1991 NFL Draft and played 11 seasons in the league with four Pro Bowl selections and three First Team All-Pro selections. He’s previously been inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, Detroit Lions Ring of Honor, 2018 ACC Legends Class and had his No. 87 retired by UVA.
