CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville is celebrating the 100th birthday of former President Jimmy Carter, calling him “a true Habitat hero” for helping grow the organization’s worldwide presence. Habitat is sharing a video called “Building with the Carters” with the former President talking about being taken to a broken, debris-filled apartment building when he was in New York City giving a speech. He became part of an effort with a bus full of 42 people to go rebuild it, an effort he said he never dreamed would become an annual thing that would enrich his and wife Rosalyn’s lives in many ways.

A Habitat release says Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville has become the most productive Habitat affiliate per service area of their size in the Country, last year working on almost 80 new homes.
We have also, like President Carter, stepped in where no one else would, helping thousands of residents avoid displacement by redeveloping two mobile home parks into inclusive new neighborhoods with a place for everyone and recently partnering with the Piedmont Housing Alliance to purchase the Carlton Mobile Home Park to save its residents from being forced out.”
