SUTHERLAND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Former State Police Superintendent Gerald Massengill, who oversaw State Police during the 9-11 and northern Virginia sniper attacks, then led a commission in the Virginia Tech shooting aftermath, died New Year’s morning at his Dinwiddie County home. He was with Virginia State Police from 1966-to-2003 and led the department from 2000-to-2003.
Governor Youngkin released a statement saying Massengill’s “tenure as Superintendent under Governors Gilmore and Warner was marked by integrity, resilience, and a profound dedication to duty. Beyond his professional achievements, Colonel Massengill was a mentor and inspiration to many in law enforcement, leaving an indelible mark on the Virginia State Police and the broader community.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him. His legacy of service and sacrifice will continue to inspire future generations.”
