CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The victim in Thursday’s classroom shooting at Old Dominion University attended Charlottesville High School, former classmates told Cville Right Now.
Lieutenant Colonel Brandon A. Shah, a Staunton native and decorated military veteran who directed ODU’s ROTC program, was killed when a gunman opened fire on a classroom Friday. Shah was killed and two other people were wounded.
Two people told Cville Right Now they went to CHS with Shah, while dozens posted about the connection on social media sites.
David Caron said he was a high school classmate of Shah’s from 1998-2002 and described Shah as “quiet, smart and kind.”
Charlottesville Public School officials were working to confirm that Shah had graduated from the high school.
Shah joined the army in 2003 as an aviation operations specialist, enrolled at ODU in 2005, and graduated in 2007, according to his profile on the school’s website.
He graduated in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a minor in military science, receiving his Army commission the same year.
Shah went on to earn a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Georgia and a Master’s of Science in engineering management from the University of Kansas.
ODU canceled classes Friday. Housing and residence life offices remained open, as did the student center. Counseling services were scheduled to be available on-site 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Broderick Dining Commons.
The gunman was subdued and killed by other ODU students. He was identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former National Guard member who spent eight years in prison after pleading guilty in 2016 to attempting to aide terrorist organization ISIS.
The FBI is investigating the incident as a possible act of terrorism.
