CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Friday, the National Weather Service extended a flood warning for portions of central Virginia, including Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville, until 5:45 PM EDT. The area has already experienced between 3 and 6 inches of rainfall, leading to significant flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone locations.
At 3:04 PM EDT, emergency management reported multiple flooded roadways due to thunderstorms. Although no additional rainfall is expected, the warning states that flooding impacts will persist throughout the afternoon.
Flooding has been reported in several locations, including Charlottesville, Free Union, Campbell, Westmoreland, Hollymead, Scottsville, Monticello, Shadwell, Carrsbrook, Keswick, Newcomb Hall, Barracks, Scott Stadium, Stony Point, Overton, Boyd Tavern, Cismont, Earlysville, Advance Mills, and Woodridge.
Flood-prone roads impacted include Route 649 at the North Fork of the Rivanna River, Route 53 near Monticello, Route 795 at Ashlawn Drive, Ivy Road, Cherry Avenue, McIntire Road, and others.
Drivers are asked to be cautious especially when dealing with flooded roads.
The NWS advises, “Turn around, don’t drown,” emphasizing that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
