MONTPELIER STATION, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A fire broke out in the archaeology office of Montpelier, the Orange County estate of Founding Father James Madison, on Monday evening.
The Orange Volunteer Fire Department responded to a 5:15 p.m. fire alarm at 13427 Dupont Circle. They were directed to 13409 Garden Road, where Montpelier’s archaeology office and laboratory are located. Crews arrived to find heavy flames. There were no injuries or loss of relics, but there was damage to the building’s porch, attic and one room.
“We are so thankful that no one was injured,” said Eola L. Dance, President and CEO of The Montpelier Foundation. “The speed of first responders from five regions of Orange County demonstrated the power of community. The rest of the property was not impacted. The historic core of Montpelier will remain open to the public and continue with normal operations.”
The cause remains under investigation.
