Finlay McLennan Ashby, 98 years old, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on October 8, 2024.
Born February 10, 1926 in Charlottesville, he was the son of Buckner and Julia Ashby. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Ashby, his parents and siblings.
Finlay was a lifelong resident of Charlottesville. While still a student at Lane High School, he volunteered for the Army during World War II and served with the 84th Field Hospital as a medic and surgical assistant. He served in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He worked in the Post Office until he retired. He enjoyed several years working on the Railway Mail Service until that was shut down. He finished his career as a Rual Letter Carrier, making friends with many of his patrons. During retirement he enjoyed gardening and some travel with his wife, Doris. He was an avid golfer and shot his age many times. He made new friends on the course, including many that were a generation younger. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He will be missed by many.
Finlay is survived by his sons and their spouses, Steve Ashby and Julia Kindred, Mike and Marilyn Ashby, grandchildren, Will Ashby, his wife, Allison, Virginia Ashby, her partner, Walter Molina, Molly Jackson, her husband Jordan, David Ashby, his fiancé, Kim Gold, great-grandchildren, Violet Ashby, Elsie and Emma Jackson.
