UPDATE 6/24 12pm: Tom Sox postpone a second straight game Tuesday because of the intense heat. The game against the Staunton Braves will be made up Monday, June 30 at CHO Airport Field at 7pm. The Sox are scheduled to play in Covington Wednesday evening at 6:30pm. Click here for more of the story.

Those thinking Monday was hot have another thing coming on this Tuesday as the temperature and heat index will be even higher with an extreme heat warning from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Accuweather’s Jeff Nordeen tells NewsRadio WINA they’re expecting a June 24 record high 100-degrees on the thermometer Tuesday afternoon with an Accuweather Real Feel up to 111. Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.
People are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in a air-conditioned spaces, stay out of the sun, and check in on relatives and neighbors.
Albemarle County is opening two cooling centers, one in the western part, and the other in the southern part of the county. One is the Greenwood Community Center at 865 Greenwood Road near Crozet, and the Yancey Community Center at 7625 Porters Road in Esmont. and they are both open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. City cooling centers are open Monday and Tuesday at the Key Rec Center at 800 E. Market St. from noon to 9 p.m.; Central Branch downtown of the JMRL at 201 E. Market St.9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Tonsler Rec Center at 500 Cherry Ave from noon to 8 p.m.; and all University of Virginia libraries where you can click here for specific locations and hours.
Monday, it was even too hot for baseball. Charlottesville Tom Sox postponed last night’s game at CHS against the Culpeper Cavaliers due to excessive heat. The date of the makeup game is to be determined. The ‘Sox are supposed to return to action tonight at CHS to take on the Staunton Braves at 7, as an extreme heat warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Click here for all Tom Sox information, including updates.
The National Weather Service also has us under an extreme heat watch for Wednesday from 11 a.m. 9 p.m. It’s not a warning yet, but conditions could be ripe for one by the time tomorrow rolls around.
