Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Education analyst Lee Elberson of Claiborne Test Prep and Tutoring weighed in on Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s initiative to create phone-free schools across the state by 2025. The governor has tasked school districts with implementing this policy, a move Elberson sees as broadly supported.
“It’s bipartisan support,” Elberson noted, emphasizing that social media’s negative impact on students’ mental health is widely recognized. He also urged parents to extend these restrictions at home, advocating for a “top-down approach” to screen time, suggesting families review and reduce their weekly screen time together.
Elberson’s comments highlight the importance of a unified effort among schools and parents to limit phone use, with the ultimate goal of improving student focus and academic performance.
