Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Education policy took center stage during the monthly discussion with education analyst Lee Elberson, CEO of Clayborne Test Prep and Tutoring. With discussions at the federal level regarding the potential dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, Elberson weighed in on the implications of a recent executive order issued by President Trump. “They already have, as part of the executive order, set to cut 50% of the department’s workforce,” Elberson noted, pointing out that the order does not directly cut education funding but does significantly reduce staffing and key programs, including diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Elberson further analyzed the long-term impact of these changes, highlighting concerns about shifting responsibilities to state governments. “Now, the states have to create these new positions and increase these departments, and doing so rapidly almost certainly is going to be cost prohibitive.” He emphasized that while the federal budget for education is relatively small, states may struggle to absorb the administrative burden in the short term.

Looking ahead, Elberson raised concerns about whether states have the necessary infrastructure to manage federal education programs, especially within a short timeframe. The challenge of transitioning responsibilities in just a few months presents significant obstacles. As education policy remains a focal point of national discussions, the debate over federal versus state control continues to evolve, leaving many questions about the future of public education unanswered.
