HARRISONBURG, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – James Madison University-based Virginia Clean Cities announces JAUNT as one of two rural public transit systems for which Dominion Energy Virginia will install new chargers for transit and public use. A VCC release says a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy is helping finance a partnership between them and Dominon Energy that “will make an impact on public transit that could be a model for the future”. Project Share Your eNroute Charge, or SYNC, creates a pilot charging network for rural transit vehicles along their routes. JAUNT’s Charlottesville area transit routes have been chosen for the program along with Bay Transit, that provides rural transit opportunities on the Nothern Neck, Middle Peninsula, as well as New Kent and Charles City counties east of Richmond.

The VCC and Dominion say Dominion Energy will provide and install the charging infrastructure along the rural routes. They will also be available for public use. With support from the Virginia Department of Public Rail & Transportation, the project will share its learnings and best practices with other transit providers. The results of Project SYNC will serve as a business model for installing enroute EV charging for other public transit agencies. Click here for all the information about the program.
