CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Thijs DeRidder scored 32 points and had eight rebounds, and Sam Lewis added 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists as No. 17 Virginia bounced back from Saturday’s loss to North Carolina to outlast Notre Dame 100-97 in double overtime in South Bend, Ind. on Tuesday night.

DeRidder, who fouled out with 45.6 left in the second overtime, became the first Virginia player to score 30 in a game since Kyle Guy in 2018,

Cole Certa scored a career-high 34 points and Braeden Shrewsberry added 18, with each hitting five 3-pointers.

Lewis scored 15 of his points for the Cavaliers after halftime, including seven in the overtime periods. His 3-pointer with 3 seconds left in the first OT kept UVA alive, and his jumper with 16 seconds remaining helped the Cavaliers hang on.

Virginia found itself down 12 points in the first five minutes against the Irish, who snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over Boston College on Saturday.

Notre Dame knocked down eight 3-pointers in the first half, led by as many as 19, and went to the locker room up 44-35. DeRidder kept the Cavaliers in the game in the first half, scoring 14 of his points before the break.

But UVA opened the second half by outscoring the Irish 22-10 over the first 12 minutes, taking a three point lead on a jumper by Devin Tillis.

The Cavaliers could not get any separation, however, and the game was tied with 3:16 to play, despite Notre Dame going 0 for 6 from 3-point range in the second half until Certa’s last make.

Lewis turned a Tillis steal into a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left, cutting Notre Dame’s lead to 70-69. DeRidder scored on a driving layup to put UVA up 71-70, but Certa answered with a deep 3-pointer for a 73-71 edge with 24 seconds to go.

Tillis knocked down a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left.

Notre Dame had the ball and called timeout with 8.6 seconds remaining. It got a corner 3-point attempt for Certa but it didn’t go down. The ball went out off UVA and the Irish got a final play, with .7 to go. Shrewsberry’s deep 3 missed, sending the game to overtime.

Notre Dame appeared to control the first overtime, but Lewis knocked down a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to force a second extra period.
