CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – After winning the 2026 MAPGA Senior Championship at Keswick Club last month, David Hutsell captured yet another trophy at the course on Wednesday, winning the 21st Senior Open of Virginia.
Hutsell, a PGA member and lead instructor at the Baltimore Country Club, claimed the title by three strokes over amateur Steve Serrao, finishing 7-under 137 across the two-day tournament.
“It’s a great tournament,” Hutsell said afterward. “It’s got a great history, great winners in the past, so the opportunity to come down here and compete with the best amateurs and professionals in this area and our section, you always relish those opportunities.”
After going 6-under-par through the first day and sitting atop the leaderboard, Hutsell got off to a strong start to the second day with birdies on the first two holes and one more on Hole 7. But bogeys on Holes 11 and 15 cut into his lead.
But Hutsell regained momentum in a major way on Hole 16, putting from around 105 feet to put the ball within a foot-and-a-half of the hole to make par and maintain his lead. He said afterward he never even practiced putts of that length.
“It’s just feel,” Hutsell said. “It was a little downhill, about two-thirds of the way there, but it looked like it was kind of coming back up the hill a little bit, and yeah, it was just, try to go with your gut.”
Hutsell was tied for the lead after the first day with UVA men’s golf alum and fellow PGA member Jimmy Flippen, who finished the tournament tied for fourth, 1-under 143.
“I love the golf course,” Flippen told the Virginia State Golf Association after the first day. “I feel like I have a little bit of history with it, because we used to play this golf course for qualifying when I played on UVA’s team. I played in the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial on the Canadian Tour when it was here. I played on the Teardrop Tour when it was here. That was before all of the renovations, but the golf course still feels like home.”
While a native of Harve de Grace, Maryland, Hutsell also expressed his love for the course on Tuesday, saying it reminded him of another course, Bulle Rock, back in his hometown.
“I can’t say I won anything there,” Hutsell quipped, “but (I) played there a number of times and it’s nice to just have that kind of familiarity with things. Just makes you feel a little more comfortable.”
Hutsell walked away with his first Senior Open win, besting Serrao of the Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond, who finished second with 4-under 140, to claim the title.
“I got to play with Steve (Serrao) yesterday, and just a solid player, a really really great guy,” Hutsell said. “I could tell from his game, just the first time playing with him yesterday, he was not gonna make it easy.”
