CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — The 39th Annual Virginia Film Festival will take place from Oct. 21-25, the festival’s organizers announced Thursday afternoon.

The festival, which is a program of the University of Virginia, is coming off of its 38th annual festival last October, with 131 films screened, drawing 23,651 total attendees with 47 sold-out events.

“Last year’s program, put together by our outstanding Artistic Director Ilya Tovbis, further solidified our position as one of the premier regional film festivals in America,” Executive Director and UVA Vice Provost for the Arts Jody Kielbasa wrote in a press release. “Our audiences delighted in a lineup that featured awards season standouts including Chloe Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’, Scott Cooper’s ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,’ and Noah Baumbach’s ‘Jay Kelly’ in addition to leading films from around the globe and right here in Virginia.”

Now, the festival shifts its focus to this year. The festival also announced the opening of its annual Call for Entries, in which filmmakers can submit their work to be considered for the festival. Residents in Virginia and students in Virginia schools are eligible to have their entry fees waived, while students from outside of Virginia can submit a film in any category with a 75% discount. The Early Bird deadline is May 5, and the regular submission deadline is June 30.

“Whether you’re a filmmaker, a cinephile, or someone who simply enjoys great movies and the conversations that flow from them, I hope you’ll plan to join us from Oct. 21-25,” Tovbis wrote in the press release.
