CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Danville City Councilman J. Lee Vogler was attacked Wednesday and set on fire, according to a release from the Danville Police Department.
Vogler was airlifted to a regional medical facility for treatment. The extent of his injuries are not known.
Police have a suspect, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, of Danville, in custody. According to the police, the two men know each other and have a dispute that is not related to the 38-year-old Vogler’s position on the city council or any other political matter.
The attack occurred at the 700 block of Main Street shortly before 11:30 a.m. According to the police statement, Vogler was at his place of business. Vogler is the managing partner for Andrew Brooks Media Group, according to the Danville government website.
“Based on witness information provided to officers at the scene, the suspect entered into the victim’s place of employment, confronted him and doused him with a flammable liquid,” the DPD statement said. “The victim and suspect exited the building, where the suspect then set the victim on fire. The suspect fled the scene, however witness information provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle. Officers located and stopped the vehicle several blocks from the incident and the driver was taken into custody without incident.”
Vogler became the youngest person ever elected to the Danville City Council in May 2012, when he was 24. He is a Danville native and 2010 VCU graduate.
