CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Past and present members of the UVA swimming team closed out the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with an impressive haul of medals and records.
The 10-person contingent of UVA swimmers amassed 13 medals, including seven golds, five silvers, and one bronze.
Three golds came courtesy of alumna and Paris Olympic medalist Kate Douglass. Douglass nabbed an individual title for the 200-meter breaststroke, which she finished in an American-record time of 2:18.50. She also was a part of two gold medal-winning and world-record setting American relay teams, the women’s 4x100m Medley Relay and the Mixed 4×100 Free Relay.
Fellow UVA alumna and Paris Olympic medalist Gretchen Walsh chipped it with two individual golds of her own. She netted the first ever long-course titles of her career in both the 50-meter butterfly and 100-meter butterfly. She also was a part of the American gold medal-winning 4×100 Medley relay team, alongside Douglass and UVA rising junior Claire Curzan. Curzan also won a bronze in the 200-meter backstroke.
Finally, Alex Walsh added an impressive silver in a competitive field in the final of the 200-meter IM.
