CUMBERLAND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In disappointing news for high school football players and fans, Cumberland County Public Schools announced this morning the cancellation of their Varsity Football program for the 2024 season.
The decision was primarily driven by a lack of participation among upper-grade students. To avoid placing younger players in a competitive environment for which they are not prepared, the school will focus on developing and strengthening its JV Football program for the 2024 season.
School officials hope to shift the traditional Friday night football experience to Wednesdays, the JV team’s game day, encouraging the community to “rally around our JV team and continue to showcase our #DukePride.”
The JV Dukes will play their first game of the season at home against William Campbell High School on Wednesday, August 28th, at 6:30 PM.
