CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Culpeper native Maliq Brown and University of Virginia center Ugo Onyenso were selected in the second round of the NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
Brown, a forward at Duke and former Blue Ridge High School star, was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft on Wednesday. The 6-foot-9, 225-pounder went to the San Antonio Spurs with the 44th pick overall, the 14th pick in the second round.
Brown, who started his college career at Syracuse, was named the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year for the Blue Devils this past season.
Onyenso, a 7-foot, 245-pound shot blocker, was taken by the Houston Rockets with the 23rd pick of the second round, No. 53 overall. Houston traded him to the New York Knicks, who then traded Onyenso to the Detroit Pistons for cash considerations.
UVA coach Ryan Odom was with Onyenso in Brooklyn, N.Y. for the draft.
Three picks after Brown’s selection, the Phoenix Suns selected Harrisonburg native Tyler Nickel, who played collegiately at North Carolina, Virginia Tech and, this past year, at Vanderbilt, then traded him to the New York Knicks. Nickel went 47th overall.
At No. 48, the Dallas Mavericks took Virginia Tech’s Tobi Lawal, who started his career at VCU.
