CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Two local schools have been recognized for outstanding architectural design in the Virginia School Boards Association Exhibition of School Architecture. Crozet Elementary School in Albemarle County earned the Platinum Design Award, while Greenbrier Elementary School in Charlottesville City received an Honorable Mention for innovative renovations.

Crozet Elementary won the Platinum Design Award for its major expansion project. Designed by VMDO Architects, the school’s capacity more than doubled, growing from 330 to 680 students. According to the VSBA, the design stood out for its flexible and forward-thinking approach, featuring a new three-story learning wing, enhanced spaces for physical education, and an expanded kitchen and dining area to support the larger student body.

Greenbrier Elementary School received an Honorable Mention for its renovation project, also designed by VMDO Architects. The VSBA praised the redesign for making the most of its existing space while creating a more modern and functional learning environment.

The projects were among 14 submissions from eight architectural firms across the state.

The VSBA organizes the competition to highlight school projects they believe set the standard for educational design across Virginia.
