CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Officials from Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville have lined up behind Tom Perriello, endorsing the former Congressman whether he’s running in the 5th or 6th District.

A list of local political figures, including the full Albemarle County Board of Supervisors and the full Charlottesville City Council, back Perriello, an Albemarle native who represented the 5th District in Congress from 2009-11. He is the last Democrat to hold that seat.

“I’m deeply grateful to every member of the Charlottesville City Council and the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors for their leadership and support of this campaign,” Perriello said in a statement announcing the endorsements. “Communities across the Blue Ridge deserve a champion in Congress who will work with local leaders to bring down health care and housing costs, protect our freedoms, and restore investments in infrastructure and scientific research. I promise to put our communities first.”

Perriello, who previously had picked up endorsements from Gov. Abigail Spanberger, Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, and Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, among others, announced the new batch of local backers Thursday. That group included Albemarle supervisors Ned Gallaway, Sally Duncan, Ann Mallek and Fred Missel, along with former supervisors Jim Andrews and Diantha McKeel.

Earlier in the week, Supervisor Mike Pruitt dropped his bid for the Congressional seat and threw his support behind Perriello.

From the city, where Perriello already held the endorsement of Mayor Juandiego Wade and Vice Mayor Natalie Oschrin, he added support from City Councilors Jen Fleisher, Michael Payne and Lloyd Snook.

Perriello also picked up the backing of Albemarle Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Hingeley and Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania.

Perriello is currently running in the 5th District, but has said he will run in the 6th if Democratic redistricting efforts pass the Virginia Supreme Court and are supported by voters in an April referendum. Albemarle and Charlottesville are currently part of the 5th District, but would be in the 6th under the redrawn maps.
