CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Jim Ryan’s employment contract as president at the University of Virginia guaranteed him the sabbatical and professorships that the school announced he is taking following his resignation earlier this month, and not any type of new deal.

According to a copy of Ryan’s contract, obtained by Cville Right Now through a Freedom of Information Act request, Ryan – who started at UVA in August of 2018 – accrued two months of sabbatical leave for each year of service.

Ryan was also guaranteed a faculty appointment as the George M. Kauffman Presidential Professor and tenured professor posts in both the School of Law and the Curry School of Education, according to the contract. His pay will be 75% of the $750,000 that was his annual base salary as president.

Ryan resigned June 27, under pressure from the Trump Administration, which said Ryan and the school failed, on multiple occasions, to provide confirmation that UVA was in compliance with federal laws and legal rulings that included the demand the university dismantle all of its diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

Ryan feared that the federal government would withhold funds the school needed for research and scholarships if he stayed in his position. His final day on the job was July 11.

UVA announced Ryan’s future plans on July 2, including the sabbatical followed by the return as a full professor.

The university, currently led by acting president Jennifer “J.J.” Wagner Davis, is conducting a search for an interim president and for Ryan’s permanent successor.
