Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Sheri Owen from the local chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association joined Morning News to share updates on the organization’s ongoing and upcoming events. One of the major initiatives, “The Longest Day,” celebrates fundraising efforts around the summer solstice, but Owen emphasized the flexibility of participation. “Even though the longest day is in the middle of June… people are doing things up until June, after June, anything that you want to do,” she said. Activities range from hiking and biking to cooking and card tournaments, all geared toward raising awareness and funds.
Owen also previewed the Charlottesville Walk to End Alzheimer’s, set for October 26. “It’s the largest fundraising event for the association,” she noted, highlighting that over 600 walks will occur nationwide. Local enthusiasm is strong, with many new teams forming. “I did a kickoff for a company last week. They signed up 41 people and I’m thrilled,” Owen said, pointing to new sponsors and growing support.
What drives the momentum is a shared sense of hope. “We actually believe that in my lifetime we’re going to see a cure for Alzheimer’s,” Owen said. She stressed that funds raised go directly into critical research, education, and support services, all of which are offered free to the public.
