Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Commonwealth Attorney Joe Platania addressed the ongoing challenges of gun violence in Charlottesville, following a recent homicide case. “One of the things I didn’t say was Mr. McDonald’s 12-year-old daughter took the stand and gave victim impact testimony… It would be so powerful for people that are picking up guns and committing acts of violence in this community to be sitting here watching this,” Platania shared, reflecting on the emotional impact of the case.

Platania emphasized the need for community support and proactive measures to address youth violence, stating, “We can’t demonize these young folks. I don’t think they’re inherently evil or sociopaths. I think we’ve got to care for them and love them and support them.”

As the city grapples with rising concerns over gun violence, Platania highlighted a community initiative called the Community Academy, designed to educate residents about the legal system and promote engagement. With 12 participants in the inaugural class, the program aims to create understanding and collaboration between the prosecutor’s office and the citizens of Charlottesville.
