Charlottesville, VA (cvillerightnow.com): During the final Charlottesville City Council meeting of 2024, City Manager Sam Sanders has reiterated that no decision has been reached regarding forthcoming plans for a low-barrier shelter in the Fifeville neighborhood. Sanders spoke about his desire for this shelter after the events surrounding Market Street Park in October of 2023. The Salvation Army has offered up the Cherry Avenue space in question for the shelter, however, the City Manager’s office has faced significant pushback since their intentions for the space were announced, in particular, following the most recent Neighborhood Association meeting. Ben Eppard expressed the concerns of many of the meeting’s attendees, and said he believes it makes more sense for the low-barrier shelter to be located on Ridge Street, in another space The Salvation Army offered for that purpose, and to put a high-barrier shelter on Cherry Avenue at the space in question. Sanders will attend the January 9th Neighborhood Association meeting to field questions.
