Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville City Manager Sam Sanders recently outlined key city priorities, including plans for a year-round low-barrier homeless shelter on Cville Right Now live.

Describing the shelter as a vital component of the city’s safety net, Sanders addressed concerns surrounding the proposed site, a former thrift store on Cherry Avenue, which has become a point of contention in the community. “If you’re concerned about how it’ll operate, let’s talk, let’s figure that out,” Sanders said, encouraging open dialogue and collaboration with residents.

The closure of Reed’s Super Save Market was also a prominent topic, as some residents expressed their hopes for a grocery store to take its place at the Cherry Avenue location. While acknowledging the need for improved food access, Sanders stressed the importance of addressing the city’s immediate challenges while also focusing on long-term solutions.

Sanders reiterated the city’s broader commitment to affordable housing and enhanced social services, positioning the shelter as part of a comprehensive effort to meet the needs of vulnerable populations. He highlighted the challenge of balancing immediate relief with sustainable community development goals.

“Homelessness touches a lot of people, a lot of different experiences,” Sanders said, urging the community to move beyond stereotypes and work together to create effective solutions that support those in need.
