City, county schools on two-hour delays Tuesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – With overnight temperatures expecting to dip below 20 degrees, area roads could be dangerous on Tuesday morning.

Virginia State Police (VSP) is urging drivers to prepare well in advance and use extra caution when traveling. VSP will have troopers and supervisors actively monitoring roadway conditions statewide. To help prevent unnecessary crashes, motorists are encouraged to postpone travel when possible and avoid driving until conditions improve.

AccuWeather chief meteorologist Brian Thompson says it all boils down to bitter cold.

“Watch especially untreated surfaces,” he said. “Anything that’s slushy or wet will likely freeze up pretty solid as the temperatures drop well below freezing and it’s going to be a very cold day on Tuesday, especially for this early in December, with a high of around 33 under a party cloudy sky. The overnight low of 13 is just two degrees away from 1917’s record 11 degrees.”

VSP troopers were very busy on Monday. Between 12:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., troopers responded to 155 crashes statewide. No fatalities have been reported, but 11 of the crashes did result in injuries. In the Culpeper District, which includes greater Charlottesville, there were six crashes. It is possible that accidents on city and county roads could run higher.

Virginians are reminded to only call 911 or #77 on a cell phone in an emergency. Keeping non-emergency calls off these lines ensures emergency resources remain available for those in immediate need.
