CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – City Council Tuesday night celebrated Charlottesville High School’s 2023-24 school year state champions. The boys’ tennis team was there strong, which CHS Athletics Director Andy Hall said was not unusual. He called them a group of “great young men”, and pointed out he can’t keep them off the tennis courts. He noted the team has high goals again this year as they were proliferated with underclassmen last year.

A second proclamation went to the boys’ state champion soccer team. The players were not in attendance as Hall pointed out it’s club soccer season and they had practice Tuesday night. Hall said state champions are formed year-round, and club soccer helps make them better and prepare for this coming season.

A third proclamation went to track athlete Elaina Pierce who in her sophomore year last year won state championship in both the indoor and outdoor 1600-meter races. A woman assistant cross country coach Jen Hochrein described to The Daily Progress as “a rock star”, Hall noted Pierce won her outdoor state championship race by more than 9 seconds over the 2nd-place finisher. Pierce also does high jump on the track team, and a leading scorer on the Region 4D champion basketball team. Click here for the DP article about Elaina.
