CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – City Council tonight considers salary increases for Councilors and the Mayor. The General Assembly this past winter amended Virginia code to increase salaries paid to City Councilors largely based on population. Charlottesville can increase the Mayor’s annual salary to $37,000 from the current $20,000… and Councilors to $34,000 from the current $18,000.
Mayor JuanDiego Wade made the presentation a couple of weeks ago saying the pool of potential candidates for office could grow because the current salaries create a possible barrier for people with less financial means to be able to serve. The increase cannot go into effect until the July 1 after the next general election… which would be July 1, 2026.
