CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – The Charlottesville Department of Utilities is bringing back the Arbor Day Foundation’s Energy-Saving Trees Program this spring for its fourth year, now a biannual event, the city announced in a release. Starting Monday, March 3, city residents can reserve one of 200 free trees to plant on their property, aiming to conserve energy and lower utility costs.
According to the city’s release, strategically planted trees can provide shade in summer and act as wind barriers in winter, reducing household energy use. They also contribute to carbon sequestration, improved air quality, and better stormwater filtration. This season’s tree options, selected with guidance from the city’s arborist, include eastern ninebark, northern spicebush, hazelnut, river birch, and pin oak.
Tree reservations are first-come, first-served and can be made through Utilities’ updated interactive tree portal at www.arborday.org/charlottesville, the city stated. The portal offers step-by-step guidance to help homeowners plant trees in the most energy-efficient locations.
The city also reminded residents to contact Virginia 811 at least three working days before planting to have underground utility lines marked for safety. More information about the program is available through Utilities Outreach at utilitiesoutreach@charlottesville.gov.
