Charlottesville, VA (cvillerightnow.com): Wins have come at a premium for the Charlottesville Tom Sox in the Valley League this season, but last night’s dramatic 10-7 triumph over the Culpepper Cavaliers surely felt sweet for the C-Ville club.

Culpepper was looking for only their second win of the year while the hometown Sox were looking for their third.  It started out well for the visitors, putting up five runs in the top of the 5th inning to take a commanding advantage, breaking a 1-1 tie.

Defense continues to be a concern for the Sox.

Fortunately, Charlottesville’s bats would answer in the sixth.

Patrick Niehus reached first to lead off the inning thanks to an error by the visitors.  From that point, the offense exploded.  Andrew Mannelly slapped a two RBI single after Tanner Schaedel also reached and scored on the Wofford man’s line drive.  James Nunnalee followed him with an RBI single of his own.

Kyle Langley chipped in with a sacrifice fly.  Finally, for the coup de gras, after Jackson Sirois loaded the bases with a walk, Niehus stepped in for his second at-bat of the inning and took the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to give the Sox a 9-6 lead.  Each team earned one more run, but the Gardener-Webb slugger’s slam proved to be the deciding blow, and the game ended 10-7.  Thanks to the win, the Sox move to 3-5 on the year.
