Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis joined Morning News to address a recent arrest that drew headlines he says were misleading and politically charged. Speaking candidly, Kochis clarified that neither the city manager nor political motives had any influence on the arrest. “The initial headline that came out that straight up said that the city manager called me to arrest and investigate this individual, and that’s just not true,” he stated. He criticized what he called “tabloid-ish” headlines crafted for clicks, warning that misinformation can damage public trust.

Chief Kochis also addressed community concerns following a weekend shooting in the nearby county that struck vehicles and buildings. While not a city case, he confirmed city detectives were briefed due to its proximity. “It’s my understanding a small child was in one of those cars that was struck,” he said, emphasizing that even when no one is physically harmed, the emotional toll and danger remain significant. “Just because nobody was hit, it’s equally as concerning,” he added.

Responding to broader public safety fears, Kochis acknowledged anxieties over gang-related violence. While Charlottesville doesn’t see the structured gangs of larger cities, he warned, “They’re equally as dangerous.” He said the department is focused on removing prolific offenders from the streets and continues to make progress in preventing retaliatory violence.
