Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a recent interview, Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis addressed concerns surrounding gun violence and public safety in the city. Chief Kochis provided updates on a high-profile arrest related to a shootout on September 9th involving three individuals near a local park. “If folks are going to continue to pick up firearms and commit crime in the city, we will find them, we will arrest them, and we will do everything in our power to make sure they have their day in court,” Kochis said, emphasizing the department’s commitment to tackling gun-related crimes.

Chief Kochis also highlighted ongoing efforts to rehabilitate individuals after incarceration but acknowledged the challenges. “You’re not getting rehabilitated while you’re locked up… but at the end of the day… we have to protect the community as well,” Kochis explained, reflecting on the delicate balance between rehabilitation and public safety.

He further commended the progress the department has made, noting a significant reduction in officer vacancies from 30 to five, which has allowed for a more community-focused and effective police force.
