CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Several weeks ago the City announced that they would be implementing speed cameras in three city school zones, but there was a slight delay in activating the system.  City Police have now activated the school zone speed cameras starting Monday morning at school zones at Summit and Johnson elementaries, and Buford Middle.  The intersection in front of Summit Elementary School is a busy one that has a crossing guard, but residents have complained about the speed and volume of traffic on Monticello Avenue in front of the school. Residents and crossing guards at the Cherry Avenue schools have made the same claims.

Now violations of 26-miles-an-hour or more during school zone times are subject to $100 fines. The speed limits when the lights are flashing are 15-miles-an-hour, and go into effect from an hour before school start to when school starts in the morning, then from when school ends to an hour afterward.
