Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville’s Director of Communications, Afton Schneider, shared key updates on city projects and initiatives on Morning News. One major topic was the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) traffic study at West Main and Ridge. While emphasizing the city’s commitment to improving transportation, Schneider clarified its role in the project. “This is definitely a VDOT project and not a City of Charlottesville project, but we are always looking at ways that we can better get people around town, especially downtown,” she said.

The city manager’s office continues to prioritize collaboration, with regular meetings between City Manager Sam Sanders, Albemarle County Executive Jeff Richardson, and Superintendent Dr. Gurley. Meanwhile, the budget process for fiscal year 2026 is nearing its final stages. “We’re getting very close… we’re hoping to have the budget adopted on April 14th,” Schneider confirmed.

Community engagement remains a top priority, with ongoing efforts in foster care recruitment and youth internships. An upcoming information session on April 10th will provide guidance on becoming a foster parent. “On April 10th, we’re going to have an information session on learning the first steps on how to become a foster parent,” Schneider noted.

Looking ahead, the city is planning celebrations for two major milestones, the 50th anniversary of the Downtown Mall and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, promising exciting events for the community. “ We’re really planning some fun things. We don’t have anything to let anybody know about yet, but there will definitely be events and activities that we will let the community know about so that they can be involved and just have a fun time and celebrate,” Schneider said.
