WV (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville Media Group entities cleaned up at the 2024 Associated Press Awards Saturday at the Greenbrier among media properties in Virginia and West Virginia winning 15 awards in the non-metro radio category, 14 of them First Place, including First Place for “Best Website” in CvilleRightNow.com‘s first year of existence. The contest is judge by numerous judges in other states who volunteer their time to watch TV and listen to radio and other multi-media offerings. CvilleRightNow.com was described as “very clean, clear, and user friendly. Lots of content that is regional and engaging for their audience. Excellent work.” The primary recipients for such work are Editor-in-Chief Jaclyn Piermarini and writer and social media guru Olivia Davis, and lots of assists on social media by Samantha Federico.
Newsradio 98.9 & AM1070 WINA swept the categories of “Outstanding News Operation of the Virginias” for the 6th straight year, and added another year as “Outstanding Sports Operation of the Virginias”. Newsradio WINA’s The Schilling Show was First Place in four awards, including the 3rd straight year for “Best Talk Show”. The Schilling Show is batting a thousand in First Place awards as they also won Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Matan Goldstein’s story of antisemitic mistreatment on Grounds at UVA, Excellence in Public Service Through Journalism for its examination with Police Chief Sean Reeves, Fire Rescue Chief Dan Eggleston, and Chief Human Services Officer of Albemarle County’s HART Crisis Team, and Best Old Dominion Heritage for the show with Lunelle Siegel of Defend Arlington.
Real Estate Matters’ Michael Guthrie, who wins awards every year, is the recipient of three: part of a team with Jay Hart and Dori Zook in First Place for Best Continuing News for the “Habitat Purchase Carlton Mobile Home Park Toward Affordable Housing”; First Place in Best Documentary or In-Depth for his “Deep Dive Habitat Purchase Carlton Mobile Home Park”, and Second Place in Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Yolunda Harrell for “New Hill Development Means Business”.
Newsradio WINA also has the best news and sports anchors, as well as Best Sports Play-by-Play of 2024. Dori Zook for at least the 8th straight year is Best News Anchor, and Luke Neer was this year’s recipient for Best Sports Anchor as well as Best Sports Play-by-Play on an entry involving UVA lacrosse. New kid on the block, Marshall LeMert won First Place in the first broadcast award he’s ever individually entered as Best Newscast of 2024.
Finally, Newsradio WINA was the First Place recipient for Best Spot News by Jay Hart, Jaclyn Piermarini, and Jay James for the “Jackson-Via Morning Drop-off Fire” last December.
