CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW)- A Charlottesville man who reported being robbed at gunpoint is now charged with filing a false police report.
According to a release from Charlottesville Police, on March 5, officers responded to the 21oo block of Michie Dr. for a report of an armed robbery. The reported victim, Timothy Newton Jr., told police he had been robbed a gunpoint and that his vehicle, wallet and phone had been stolen.
Charlottesville police alerted neighboring jurisdictions to be on the lookout for the vehicle, and Albemarle County police located Newton’s vehicle in the 700 block of Castle Ct. According to the CPD release, officers learned his vehicle had been involved in a recent vehicle vandalism, and when police attempted to make a traffic stop of Newton’s car, one person was detained with the vehicle while the rest of the occupants fled. Newton identified the person detained as one of the suspects who had robbed him, but according to the release, officers determined that Newton had falsely reported the robbery in an attempt to conceal his involvement in the earlier vehicle vandalism.
The investigation into the vandalism is ongoing.
