CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) –  The Charlottesville Department of Utilities has announced that no lead was found in water service lines in both City and private water systems, following a multi-year comprehensive review. The inspection, initiated in 2021 in response to updates to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule, required water providers to inventory all service lines in their systems to identify and replace any lead lines that might still be present.Lead in drinking water is toxic and can harm health, even at low levels, especially in young children. Prolonged exposure can lead to serious developmental, neurological, and physical issues.

Charlottesville’s Department of Utilities began this process in January 2022, using past studies, City Code research, and water testing to create a Lead Service Line Inventory. In 2023, they used a statistical method to find possible lead service line locations, but none were found.
