Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville City Councilor Lloyd Snook provided an update on recent city projects and legislative priorities on WINA Morning News. Councilor Snook highlighted a series of updates from the council meeting, including reports on local road projects, public housing redevelopment, and the city’s legislative goals for 2025.
In his comments on the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) projects, Snook expressed frustration with delays, saying, “Charlottesville has had, for at least the last 10 years anyway, a real problem getting VDOT projects actually completed.” Snook shared that new management under City Manager Sam Sanders aims to address these delays, noting that several projects might face cuts or reallocation of funds due to rising costs.
The council also discussed ongoing efforts with the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA) to improve public housing. Snook explained that establishing a separate LLC for CRHA projects is essential for financing, as they plan a $100 million redevelopment of Westhaven. “We just really feel that…what we needed at that particular location is to rebuild with more modern construction methods,” Snook said, underscoring the need for improved housing and revenue generation through commercial spaces.
In legislative priorities, Snook mentioned that the council will ask for increased state funding for school construction and changes to affordable housing policies, as well as support for sustainable energy initiatives.
