Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Charlottesville 10 Miler is marking a major milestone this year with its 50th annual race, bringing together thousands of runners, walkers, and volunteers. Tammy Barboza, Philanthropy Assistant Director at The Center, highlighted the importance of the event, noting that The Center is “thrilled to be one of three primary beneficiaries this year.” The race, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, will both start and finish near UVA’s Scott Stadium, with more than 400 volunteers needed to support the event.

Volunteers play a crucial role in making the 10 Miler a success, with The Center aiming to recruit 50 volunteers for tasks such as race check-in, water stations, and food table setup. “The Center is not only a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, but we love to give back,” Barboza said, emphasizing their commitment to community engagement. Beyond supporting the race, The Center places volunteers at various area nonprofits, extending its outreach efforts throughout Charlottesville.

Beyond the logistical support, Barboza also highlighted the personal and health benefits of volunteering. “Folks can even experience improvement in physical and emotional health; for example, the lowering of blood pressure, the lowering of stress levels, and who doesn’t need that?” she noted. With The Center promoting engagement across seven dimensions of wellness, from social to occupational, this partnership highlights the race’s impact not only as a fitness event but as a catalyst for volunteerism and community well-being.
